PHOENIX — Phoenix police are asking the public to avoid the area of 48th Street and McDowell Road amid a shooting investigation.
Police say a shooting occurred in the area around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
An ABC15 photojournalist at the scene saw a man who appeared to be a victim of a shooting. Police say that the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was reportedly seen running onto Brunson Lee Elementary School grounds, prompting a large police presence and a search of the campus. A school representative told ABC15 that the suspect was never inside the school, but had jumped a fence to an apartment complex.
Police urged no one to go to the school "until this situation is resolved" Thursday morning.
Police say they completed a search of the school and no suspect was located.
Before 8 a.m., police provided an update, saying: “Officers will begin to narrow down the affected area that will be shut down. As the school opens up parents’ (are) reminded that the neighborhood will still have portions shut down due to the ongoing investigation into the shooting.”
Also around 8 a.m., ABC15 crews saw multiple students arriving at the campus for the school day.
School administrators were reportedly notifying families regarding the opening of the school.

Roads in the area were also restricted due to the investigation.
