SURPRISE, AZ — A man is dead after a shooting involving Surprise police early Sunday morning.
Surprise police say they were called to a home near Dysart Road and Waddell Road around 3 a.m.
“The initial report for that was called into 911, it was reporting a domestic violence incident. The details of that incident are still under investigation,” said Sgt. Rick Hernandez, a Surprise Police Department spokesperson.
“We can confirm at this time that the deceased subject was armed with a firearm. However, we are not disclosing what type of firearm that is at this time,” said Hernandez.
The firearm was later revealed to be a shotgun, according to Buckeye Police Department officials.
The officer fired his gun a short time later. The man, identified as Trinidad Ledesma, died at the scene.
No one else, including any officers, was hurt.
The Buckeye Police Department will handle the investigation from here and forward it to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review.
“And at the time that the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office makes a decision is typically when our office, Surprise Police Department, will make that body-worn camera available,” said Hernandez.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.
